Sen. Gordon Smith... Potential Challenge Looming?
.jpg)
It should be no big surprise that the rank and file Republicans are not happy with Sen. Gordon Smith. Recently in a BrainstormNW editorial Smith was taken to task for not taking Social Security reform very serious (sorry I could not find the link) and the Gordon Smith team went utterly ballistic on the authors and even tried to drive one of them out of the party.
At the Dorchester Conference this year Smith was met with a pretty cold reception. A source has told me that the Smith folks are concerned about a challenge in the primary. You know something like George H.W. Bush’s wrestling match with Pat Buchanan in, when was that, 1992?
However there is a major hurdle to any Republican that might want to challenge Sen. Smith. First and foremost is money. Smith has a couple of million dollars on hand and any challenger would need a couple of million dollars just to gain the requisite name ID. However a challenger with high name ID and conservative street cred may (I say may) be able to jump that hurdle somewhat.
Secondly anyone within the Republican establishment would really be frowned upon for taking on a sitting Republican. Just remember what happened to Larry George when he took on then sitting state Sen. Charles Starr. So any challenger would probably have to come from outside the establishment.
Enter an old name on a new mission?
Well an old name seems to have quietly appeared on the Coyote’s radar screen. An old name that is, consequently a Republican with very high name ID and very high favorable numbers with the Republican party rank and file. AND is not really beholden to the "certified smart" people in the establishment.
So I did the deed. I asked Bill Sizemore if running for the US Senate, in the Republican primary is a possibility. He said, “That’s not far fetched.”
In a brief discussion with Sizemore on a few things I learned that he is with the party mainstream on immigration (he is the chief petitioner on an English immersion ballot measure). He is of course with the mainstream on tax and land use policy. And he is with the party mainstream on the Iraq war. (He made sure to point out that he is not with ME on the war... We will just have to talk to him about that...yip yip)
Of course all of this is speculation at this point. Well except for the part about Bill Sizemore saying that a Senatorial run is “not that far fetched.” However if certain planets were to align correctly and if Sen. Smith continues his move to the left this situation could have the makings for an eventful fall of 2007. And beyond? I might also point out that images of Sen. Smith standing side by side with Ted Kulongoski favoring state sponsored health care can't be helpful in a Republican primary.
So if there are any “planetary” Republicans in Oregon reading this and you want to give Bill Sizemore some input perhaps you can drop him an email? Try it at: Bill at OTU dot org.
Oh... and you didn’t hear this from me.

This could be fun.
I wonder if Smith would unload with everything and smear the living crap out of Sizemore?
Yeah, who am I kidding.
Sizemore would annihilated in the primary. Smith on one flank, unions on the other.
It would be fun to watch, like watching a ten car pile up with multiple fatalites on I-5.
I gotta agree with Non on this one, Coyo. Sizemore is political cannon fodder now, and he's more or less irrelevant in the scheme of things.
I know that many of us have wondered what it would take for Gordon Smith to finally take his base seriously. If it takes a challenge during the primary from a ideologue like Sizemore, then so be it.
I don't know that Gordon Smith is that safe in his seat where a challenge mounted by Bill Sizemore wouldn't worry him.
The real question is: Who would want to go back to D.C. and serve with all those other idiots in the U.S. Senate.
The challenger would hard press to get any support from the Republican Establishment. Our National committeeman told us that the Republican Party will remain neutral during the primary Last Tuesday. In fact, this guy was very apologetic on Mr., Smiths voting record using the blue state excuse. It looks like the democrat will have to gain his seat before the Republican Establishment listen.
As a lifelong Republican (reluctantly at times) and a long-time supporter of Gordon Smith, I can tell you that right now I am not happy.
I have long defended Senator Smith against the more radical elements of the GOP that I interact with and discuss politics with. Until very recently, I have defended him vociferously and maintained my position that "he is the right Senator for our state".
Now that he seems to be looking a lot more like Kitzhaber or Kulongoski than Packwood or Hatfield, it's getting harder and harder to defend him.
With his ridiculous about-face on Iraq and his Ted Kennedy-esque defeatist attitude about what is being accomplished there, he has just about lost my support permanently. I'll tolerate some political differences and trust his judgment on most things, but when it comes to the safety of our brave men and women in Iraq, you don't play politics with human lives...
I tolerated his political maneuvering on a variety of issues up till very recently, but I doubt I can stomach much more.
Regarding Bill Sizemore; as a personal friend and colleague, I would hope that he "stays home" and finishes all the good fights we have left here. Oregon needs ya' Bill! Let Senator Smith twist in the wind a bit before coming back around to his GOP principles.
Sen. Smith might be vulnerable to a legitimate conservative challenger, whether or not he/she was able to raise any money. You would have helped your reputation, Coyote, by calling any thought or rumor of a Sizemore run for political office what it is - a joke. Bill's a great guy, and certainly can't be faulted for his commitment to conservative policies, if he can be for other things. But he showed in his run for Governor that he is personally unelectable and cannot be taken seriously as a candidate.
Better yet...
Greg Walden!
A run from Sizemore in the primary would be bad for our Grand Old Party. It would actually cause the Oregonian to embrace Sizemore as a bankhanded slap to Smith and an underhanded attack on what it really is to be a Republican.
Sizemore is never covered unless negatively. The rumor being that the Oregonian does not want to enable Sizemore to establish anymore successes. It would allow them to smear Sizemore as a rightwing nut while smearing Gordon Smith as to moderate to represent Oregon effectively because he broke from his party.
Stay with me on this. Seriously, watch, the Oregonian will hit Smith for being to in the middle. They will hit us from both sides and Sizemore's only success will be another bounce in name recognition with the party base and far left haters.

As a regular columnist for Brainstorm NW I have to make the following correction. The piece in question was not a BNW editorial. It was a policy perspective submitted by two guest authors. Neither the BNW editorial staff nor any of their regular contributors were "taken to the woodshed" by Smith.
Dave Lister
I don't see anything good coming out of a possible Sizemore run. First, it would be very difficult for him to win. Dare made some good comments on what the Oregonian could do to the party as a whole. The other issue is this pretty serious rumor that DeFazio is looking to run. Do we want Smith to completely wounded going into a possible fight with DeFazio?
Sizemore can't win.
Its all a showboat. If Sizemore has a longterm strategy where this plays well - so be it. If he doesn't have a real reason to run its just going to harm our party.
Dave,
Your correction is noted and it is VERY minor. OK it was not an editorial but a policy perspective.
However I need to correct you on your error. I did say that BNW was taken to the woodshed. I said the authors of the piece were. And that was the central part of that paragraph.
Dare/Anon233,
I don't want to be the one promoting or not promoting this possible scenario. However the Oregonian will take after the Republican (in this case Smith) no matter WHAT happens. If Smith is wounded it would be because he would have to dip into his warchest early. However I really doubt that he could be to awfully wounded by a primary challenge.
Anon1228,
Walden would never ever run against a sitting Republican. Remember what I said about the fact that no establishment Republican would ever run.
Anon1209,
Thanks for being concerned about my reputation, but it is doing just fine. Mostly because, unless Sizemore was trying to pull one over on me, not a joke. Consider this, he was a registered independent up until very recently.
I did give his email address to ya'll to address the matter with him directly.
Yip Yip
... I meant "politically" wounded....
One could actually make the case that any challenge to Smith from the right makes him "politically" stronger in the general.
However if he would have to dip into his warchest much THAT is where the harm could come from.
If Sizemore switched his party registration you can be sure he's planning to run.
Sizemore's name is acid (whether deservedly or not) in Oregon.
Can anything else be said that would smear Sizemore more than he has been already? Leave too small a tip at Sherri's on Beavercreek Rd, maybe?
My vote for Nixon when I was in a conscientious objector camp in '72 was more easily swallowed than another vote for Sen Smith.
I'm ready to vote for Cricket the Wonder Dog for Senator.
