DEVELOPING HARD: Oregon GOP Secretary of State Candidate Announcing

Rick Dancer for Oregon's Secretary of State
UPDATE: Here is Rick Dancer's on air announcment. Note how he explains the connection to his capacity as a watchdog now and as a watchdog as a SoS.

NWR is hearing an unconfirmed rumor from a very reliable source that there will be a major announcement coming out of Eugene tonight. I would highly encourage any Eugene readers to tune in to the late night news. Channel 9 KEZI to be more specific.

Keep an eye out for "Rick Dancer," on tonight's news. He is probably going to be saying his goodbye's to the viewers of Lane county where he has been a newscaster for many years.

He has a great base in Lane county. He has spent a lot of years dealing with many issues and the first Secretary of State elected who was not a politician "first." Along the lines of Tom McCall.

We hinted at this earlier when back on January 15 I outlined what I called the "Jack Roberts" model for winning a statewide election. Last January I said:
There is a name circulating around right now that would indeed fit this model. The name that I am hearing would give the Democrats quite a bit of problems in terms of Willamette Valley name ID and would bring the valley very much into play.I'm not ready to reveal the name of the individual that I am hearing about just now. However I have a cautionary note to pass along to the liberal pundits who are chirping for a fight.... Be careful what you wish for.

I said that because at the time the moonbats on the left were CROWING about there not being any Republicans announcing for offices like the Secretary of State. As if there is some rule that says that we are supposed to telegraph all of our moves to the left....

Well now they got themselves a candidate to face off with in the fall. So why don't the Democrats just sit back and keep pretending that there won't be any GOPer on the ticket.

I encourage our readers to now go back and read my piece on finding a Republican with a Lane County base as opposed to a Portland base. Rick Dancer will pose a real problem for any Democrat interested in SoS and poses and GREAT opportunity for the GOP to take this seat back.
Dancer has a personal blog that is really quite well written and insightful. He is not really your politically motivated sould but someone who is obviously thoughtful with regard to the world around him. His thoughts are personal and also pretty endearing.
Now just imagine a fellow like Rick Dancer pictured side by side with Sen. Kate Brown.

To the Springfield viewers, I would go ahead and skip tonight's broadcast. Afterall, it is Springfield and North Eugene that will carry an election in Jack Robert's model that Coyote is talking about.

Dancer will dance right into being routed by whichever candidate faces him. He's not qualified to begin with...

That's right, we haven't elected a TV reporter as Secretary of State without any prior political experience since . . . what was his name? . . . Oh yes, Tom McCall!

anon 3:21,
You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Well if you do you decided not to share any of it here.

Dancer will enter this race with a HUGE name ID in one of the two population centers.

He is also smart and articulate. Not to mention that he does not come with the bucket load of negatives that a hyper partisan like Kate Brown will come with.

Oh and as for qualifications? Care to list what those are?

Because I am sure that Bill Bradley missed a BUNCH of them.

Funny how before you even know boo about someone the hateful Democrat moonbats come out and immediately go negative.

Standard course of action.

I've dealt with Rick on a number of stories. He is a really bright, articulate and knowledgable guy. He will be a terrific candidate, and one that will give any Democrat a good contest.

I think it is spelled Dantzer?

Anonymous said...

This.....is really good news. Rick can win if he gets the necessary financial support. Something tells me has that issue resolved via his employer.

Victoria and Steve,
He is a former (as of tonight?) news anchor for KEZI in Eugene.

"Rick Dancer, a long-time veteran of the news industry, anchors KEZI's primary evening newscasts. A native of Hillsboro, Dancer got his start in broadcasting in Coos Bay before settling on Eugene, a market he's been in for nearly 18 years, 16 of them at KEZI. Among his accomplishments are several AP awards for news stories, as well as interviewing Peter Jennings for Dancer's sit-down Watercooler interview segment (pieces of which aired in memory of Jennings after his death). Dancer also travels to produce features for KEZI, including recently travelling to Guatemala with photojournalist Kurt Richter to document the living conditions there."

This is not the kind of elected position that folks look for any kind of "ideological" purity or anything. Just someone who is capable and FAIR.

After 8 years of Bill Bradley this state sorely needs a non political person who is FAIR sitting in that seat.

And considering that Kate Brown is one of the most political individuals on the face of the planet, the people of Oregon will have two distinct types of personalities to choose from.

Good candiate, really should be itneresting.

I am not sure about the name recognition of Dancer outside of the Eugene area though.

Corvallis north tend to be more in the Portland Media Market. Roseburg south tend to be more Medford.

He doesn't appear to be someone that will get the more hardcore republicans. Although he might play well to independents.

His qualifications could be an issue, but that doesn't tend to make or break elections.

Anyone know how much money Dancer has? I think fundraising for Republican candidates could be problematic this time around. He should have enough connections to have a decent warchest, but if he wants to be really competitive i think he might need a lot more money to get his name recognition higher in the Portland area.

verasoie said...

I guess this is just more proof of the existence of the "liberal media" that is so frequently derided by this site and elsewhere on the Right...

verasoie said...

It's fascinating how, when you watch the video, Rick never, ever once mentions the word "Republican" during his formal announcement.

http://www.kezi.com/article.aspx?id=20120§ion=news&contentCat=local

Even KEZI doesn't mention his party affiliation on the link, that's buried on the back pages where they say "Watch Rick announce his run as a Republican ..." and yet, he does NOT announce his run as a Republican.

It sure makes it look like the word "Republican" is the scarlet letter of Oregon politics these days, and that this is Rick's strategy.

I can only imagine that his strategy is to muddy the waters and run from that affiliation as much as he can, because he knows that if he carries that label he'll get his clock cleaned by the Democratic candidate, particularly in this Presidential election year.

Verasoie dies said...

And the uberpartisans who deserve the guillotine start coming out to deride Mr. Dancer.

He wins Eugene and Central Oregon, and possibly Salem. That means Kate Brown, the presumptive nominee for SoS, loses.

That's all I need to hear.

I am Coyote said...

Cameron,
No he won't have name ID outside the Eugene area. But neither does Kate Brown have name ID outside of Portland and I bet if you polled her name there it might not get much higher than the 20 percentile range.

However that is what campaigns are for and $500,000 will buy him decent name ID. All money raised beyond that will be icing on the cake.

And he will do fine getting the "harcore" Republicans. This is the SoS position. Besides once people know just how partisan Kate Brown is the "hardore" Republicans will flock to Dancer.

His qualifications are fine. Remember he is replacing what maybe the worst SoS in the nation.

And as for money, he'll raise enough. Remember it was only up until last night that the Democrats were mocking the Republicans for "not having any candidates."

So now let their mocking turn to "they won't raise any money." Of course 9 months ago the main stream media was crowing about how much money Hillary Clinton had raised compared to ALL the Republicans COMBINED. Now she is broke. yip yip.
----------------

Verasoie 10:23 - Now THAT was a just plain stupid remark.

-----------

veraBat 12:11,
Ok then why don't you mail us the playbook that you want us to follow? OK? LOL...

Guess what verabat? Come Nov. 4 2008 everyone will know he is a Republican.

I am actually relatively certain his party affiliation will be listed ON THE BALLOT.

So... there goes another one of your straw man arguments.

You may want to tackle the boogey-man next.

Yip Yip

Anonymous said...

kate brown huh? me thinks my crystal ball says more like TV Rick v.s. TV Rick and that aint all bad.

I am Coyote said...

anon 6:29, I actually like Rick Metsger out of all the Democrats.

However I just don't know if he makes it out of the Democrat primary.

Statewide Democrat party politics, in Oregon, has become almost exactly like the Democrat politics of the city of Portland.

What that means is that if you want to run and win in Portland you MUST move further left than anyone else on the ballot. To the point of the wacko extreme.

So in the Democrat primary you have Kate Brown who is about as an extreme partisan as you can get, she happens to be a lesbian and she has the backing of the public employee unions.

When you consider that entire package I just don't see how Metsger actually wins that primary.

Unless Walker can make a big enough run to peel some votes away from Brown.

I will say that match-up wise Metsger would be the most difficult for Dancer.

If it is Brown. Well let's just say if it is Brown and Dancer can raise at least $500k then you may be saying SoS Dancer by this time next year.

This seems too good to be true. Hopefully he does not hire the same tired loosing Republican statewide campaign managers who have made a ton of money in these type of races and then not delivered.

Jay Bozievich said...

To all the BO trolls who say that Rick has no experience or name ID:

Remember Susan Castillo?

She was not even an anchor in Eugene, just a poplular feature reporter. Rick will be a great candidate.

My experience with him indicates he is a man of high integrity and that comes through in his broadcast style. Integrity is something all voters a craving this election.

Thank you Rick for stepping up!

I've known a little about Dancer since my days at UO, and between that and reading his blog, I'm hopeful. I especially hope that the contrast between his classiness and that of the Dems' will be striking to voters.

However, I'm struck by the profound lack of media coverage (other than KEZI, of course) this morning. I know the announcement was late last night, but there's nothing at the Statesman, nothing at BO, one sentence at the Register Guard, and the only thing at the Oregonian is Jeff Mapes quoting from Coyote's post. I can see the media completely ignoring Dancer until well into the general election, giving the Dems plenty of name recognition in the process.

I am Coyote said...

Jay,
Thanks for bringing up a little local analysis of Rick and for reminding everyone about Susan Castillo.

I am just going from memory here but did Phil Keisling have any qualifications before running for SoS beyond being a reporter for Willamette Week? If I am not mistaken that is what he did before hand right?

Anonymous said...

Susan Castillo was appointed by the Lane Democrats to replace Pete Soreson as State Senator, she then won outright before running for State Schools Superintendent. She had elective experience and a term in Salem. Phil Keisling won a house seat before being appointed by Barbara Roberts in what was thought of as a surprise move by many. She sidestepped Mary Wendy Roberts, whom many thought would get the appointment. Keisling went on to serve two terms while Mary Wendy was defeated by Jack Roberts as Labor Commissioner.

This is GREAT NEWS! Keep in mind people, that there is a Democratic Primary coming up for Secretary of State. And I think that most Democratic Party voters are as sick of partisan hacks like Kate Brown as most of the posters on this board are of the sorry current office holder. Hopefully, we can see a Vicky Walker or Rick Metzger as a Democrat contest this time.

Emory said...

Phew!

For a minute there - looking at Coyote's choice of photos, and the Developing Hard GOP Announcing - I thought this was going to be another 'same sex' rant.

Anonymous said...

What does R.D. think about having a non-partisan Secretary of State? Before now, the only candidate who said he favored the idea was Rick Metsger, another out-of-TV candidate.

I am Coyote said...

Leave it to moonbat emory to try to hijack another thread that is off-topic. Must be his lame attempt to be "cute."

Hey emoryBat? If you want to rant on about "same-sex" issues you can find a thread devoted to that topic... oops... I don't think I even HAVE a thread devoted to that topic. That means you ONCE AGAIN attempted to create a straw-man on this issue. Must be listening to your stereotype a little too loud again.

anon, I believe that RD said, in his press conference at Salem, that he is in favor of the SoS position being a non-partisan position.

That is something that I disagree with him on however.

For whenever you have a "non-partisan" position it will inevitably become a breeding ground for future liberal Democrats. Just look at the city of Portland.

The beauty of a partisan position is that you are gauranteed at least a debate every four years with opposing policy positions.

A non-partisan position simply becomes a beauty pageant for the big special interest donors, the public employee unions first and then the winner of that first round will get the go-ahead from the special interest lobbyists.

Then the election is over. Before it even begins.

Didn't anyone hear RD with Lars today?

Bad interview for RD. Lars was gentle but very perplexed.

RD ain't the man, period!

Emory said...

Wiley... FYI, Dancer is a distant relative.

Thanks for your support of him.

Bilgepump said...

Why owuld anyone care about Lars after the LAST election debacle?

He's a fucknut and an failure in kingmaking.

Anonymous said...

Bildge,
It's not what Lars said, it's what Dancer said, didn't say.
Wise up!

bilgepump said...

No, Anon 7:44, YOU wise up, you crack addict buttporking Eric Sten lover.

It is about Lars. Oregon needs to relegate him to the dump pile. And quickly. Anyone who listens to Lars religiously, well...they will 50% of the time get things WRONG.

Anonymous said...

Bilge,
Calling me a crack lover (I've NEVER done drugs of any kind and think gap tooth Sten is a reprehensible little man) is bilge, but then again, isn't that your handle?

I am Coyote said...

anon 6:32, then who IS the "man?"

Will it be Kate Brown?

RD will be fine and he should have never gone on the Lars Larson show.

Lars is a hypocritical idiot who is only in it for his ratings. Now I have nothing against capitalism and good for Lars for practicing it.

However bad for anyone who takes anything he says on his radio show with anything more than a grain of salt.

I heard about the RD interview and understand that it was an instance where a new candidate, who has not been in politics, thought he could carry on a conversation.

Unfortunately he learned a lesson. And fortunately it is early...wayyyy early in the process.

Dancer will be fine. Only the most marginal of individuals in the Republican fold will oppose him. And if they knew the folks who were going to be supporting him then they would feel even more silly.

yip yip
------------

bilge, watch your language...you are coming pretty close to being edited.

Anonymous said...

bilge,
Are you Randy Leonard?
Why do you hate Lars.

And coyote, that's a little over the top yourself.

"Lars is a hypocritical idiot who is only in it for his ratings."

Come on pal, he's been a stellar voice on many copnservative issues. Filling in the vacuous silence at Oregon Republican Party central.

From light rail, to education, to illega limmigration he's got it right and been loud about it.
Certainly worthy of far more than your grain of salt.

On the Dancer interview?

Get real. If Dancer can't even answer clearly on whether or not voters should show proof of citizenship he should not have gone on there. He clearly needs to bone up first.

No doubt Lars will be a supporter of RD but he would have been a hypocrite had he not pressed Rick on that matter.

Anonymous said...

Rick who?

I am Coyote said...

anon 8:08, If anyone is over the top it is Lars. I have chronicled some of Lars' problems in the past and I'll not rehash all of them here.

But he is a hypocrit and he is an idiot. Those are descriptive terms that are spot on.

He is also a pretty good talk show host in that he knows how to capture and hold an audience.

He is a terrible spokesperson for Republicans in that he is predisposed to making sure that Republicans self destruct. It is in his nature and in his best interest if he does so.

Was Dancer wrong for going on his show, especially this early on in the development of his campaign? Yup.

But guess what... Candidates make mistakes. Campaigns make mistakes. It this mistake were made in October then it would be bad.

Thankfully he learned a painful lesson early. He'll be fine.

Anonymous said...

Dancer will be fine but I don't get how the Lars interview adds to Lars being a "hypocrit and he is an idiot".

You have past issues with Lars and I suspect they are primarily with the Jason Atkinson dust up.

However,
Lars doesn't deserve your condemnation. Not even close.

I am Coyote said...

It is not that interview alone or even in general. I have not even heard the interview.

I have held these opinions of Lars for quite some time and had he not interviewd Dancer or even if it had been a pleasant one it would not change my opinion of him.

My issues go beyond the Atkinson campaign. It has to do with years of communications and back channel communications with Lars.

Anyone who knows him personally would agree with me off the record. Many have.
