BREAKING: Matt "The Law" Lindland, fighting for House Dist. 52
He is a former Olympics silver medalist, however he is probably better known as an Ultimate Fighting phenom.
Matt "The Law" Lindland got his nickname for taking a lawsuit to the Federal Courts because his opponent had violated the rules of Greco-Roman Wrestling in their Olympic qualifier. He then went on to win a silver medal.

He is known to be one of the hardest working men in that sport and conversations with people who knew him from college say that the guy just kept working and working and working until he reached the pinnacle of his sport.
Lindland still wrestles in the Ultimate Fighting world, however, he has also created a name for himself in the business world and promises that should he win the House district 52 seat (being vacated by the awesome Patti Smith) he will be fighting hard for the people of district 52.
Lindland is a family man who is solid on tax and land use issues as well as bringing a very unique resume to the race and to the Republican party.
What could make this race very interesting is that because of his resume' he could tap into a whole new set of voters. A youth movement that has locked into the sport of Ultimate fighting and that group ranges from 18-34 years of age. There have already been rumors, from some insiders that I have talked with, that he could bring in new registered voters to a seat that could easily be decided by 500 to 1,000 votes.
In an interview by "Husker Extra" (he was a former wrestler for the Nebraska Corn huskers and now resides in Estacada) there is this one paragraph analysis of the man Matt Lindland:
However the take away line was reserved for the words of Lindland himself when he was asked whether or not his new sport was sending a bad message to kids. He had this to say (emphasis mine):
Though he suffered his only defeat in the NCAA Championships and didn’t medal, Lindland went on to experience plenty of wrestling glory — earning gold medals at the 1999 and 2000 Pan American Games, winning U.S. amateur national titles in 1995 and 1997-99 and a World Cup title in 1996.
Those people, they misunderstand so much. They think my sport is just violent and brutal, but it’s not. It teaches kids values — hard work, training, confidence, all those things that made America strong but that we’re forgetting about as a society. It’s what made our country the strongest in the world. We’re the No. 1 country in the world because we’re good at competition.
Some people say this isn’t a positive thing, but it’s one of the most positive things we’ve done in sports for years. We’re competing and trying to be the best that we can. We’re bringing it back and putting it in people’s faces.
They say fighting sends the wrong message. Well, it’s wrong if your kid fights because somebody tried to take his Tonka truck, but if someone was trying to put my daughter in a real truck, I have the confidence in her that she has the martial arts skills to defend herself.
Does that sound like the kind of guy who could enter the legislature and provide some immediate leadership if not a bucket full of gravitas? Now THAT is a guy I would want representing me in the state legislature.
I had the opportunity to talk with Matt this morning and a more soft spoken guy you would probably not find in politics. I get the impression he intends to fight hard for this seat but that he is not interested in beating up a Republican opponent should he have one in the primary because he definitely believes that a Republican should retain this seat.

Great news!
We need some more tenacity in Salem and this guy has miles of it.
If he put even half the effort into being a legislator that he put into his athletic career, he'd still be outworking 90% of the other legislators.
Really, this is the best the Rs can do?
anon,
Are you serious? Who are your shining lights on the Democrat side and what have they accomplished in their lifetime?
Here you have a guy who knows the meaning of hard work and has built a successfull athletic career and then a successull business.
The State Legislature is supposed to be made up of average Oregonians pulled from their districts to represent the views and values of those districts.
What are you looking for? Career academics?
Look at the Edwardses and put their life resume' up against someone like Matt Lindland and see who has accomplished more with their lives.
Or...or you could just come out of the shadows tell us who you are and throw your hat in the ring yourself. What was it that Jack Nicholson said in "A few good men?" Grab a weapon and stand post otherwise get out of the way... heh heh heh

Wow, what a find. Matt is well respected in his sport and not just for hi athletic ability. He is known for his integrity, his work ethic, and for being an all around nice guy on the person to person level.
If he goes door to door, people will like him right off. He is as tought as nails in the ring, but outside the ring, in face to face conversation, he is as pleasant a guy as you could ask for.
I wish him luck and will send him a check. The person who made the nasty comment above about this being the best the R's can do, has no idea what they are saying. Matt is a quality guy and we can only hope the Ds take him for granted.
Anon 208 - Do you remember Jesse "The Body" Ventura?
Wow. Whoever is the media consultant for this race needs to make sure this guy's picture doesn't EVER appear without his family at his side.
He's running against an "education" Democrat who also happens to be a woman. So he's going to have to soften his image a little bit if he expects to be competitive with women.
anon 3:33,
While I am not the "media consultant" for this race I do know that the Democrat is a woman who lost last time so she is going in with a loss on her record.
I have also heard that she (the Democrat) can be quite the mean spirited battle axe. So it may turn out that she comes off as more harsh than Matt.
I read up a little about him online and he does also have quite the "personal" story as well so that will soften things up quite a bit. Not to mention that when you talk to him you find that he is quite a nice guy.
So if he gets the chance to actually get out and meet people face to face people are going to walk away saying "wow, he is a neat guy!"
It appears tha he does have a primary opponent also so first things first.

I look forward to meeting Matt. This is a very key seat, one that the R's should keep,
Anyone who thinks his unique resume is a liability is pretty misguided.
Hahahaha, are you serious?
I thought this was a joke at first. Wow.
And no AG candidate?
Leave it to the moonbat trolls to say something utterly silly.
yip yip
On the same subject of recently declared candidates, did you notice Jim Bunn throwing in for HD 24?
There are said to be several late GOP canidates who filed today. It should be interesting to see how things turn out.

Filing day, a sad day for Rs.
I ask again, nobody for AG? How is that silly Coyote?
coast guy,
Yes there were several candidates who filed and really some good surprises.
The Jim Bunn thing kinda threw a LOT of people for a loop. Not sure what is up with that or where that whole thing is going to go.
In that race you have a former union lobbyist in Ed Glad (running as a Republican?), a local small business owner and pretty conservative guy in Jim Weidner and then you have former congressman Jim Bunn? Huh?
But on the other hand Galizio may actually have his hands full and Arnie Roblan will probably lose his seat to the guy who actually won that half of the Senate district last time around. And that was before Arnie "Rollback" Roblan started his assault on property rights.
Betty Komp got a challenger which is good because her district should by all accounts go Republican with even a viable campaign and then of course you have Matt "The Law" Lindland signing up for the fightin 52nd.
Yes it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Anon democrat troll,
It is silly that you use this post to bring up the inane topic of AG.
I mean, who cares? I don't and now that you know I don't any further comments on this thread regarding it will be classified as... well... silly.
Or perhaps you want to start your own blog and call it something like "Oregon AG Blog," or "Aint the AG sexy blog," and see how many visitors you get. LOL...(I crack me up.)
All in all the last few days have actually been pretty good for Republicans. Naawwwt so good for the Democrats.
Yip Yip
What I find interesting is that in the last legislative session former Congressman Bunn was a lobbyist by his own word. Now he is a Deputy Sheriff. Prior, by account of the “journalistic community” he was declared a jail guard in Yamhill County.
This is not meant as any sort of criticism or attack on the former Congressman, but it is a simple observation on his fascinating professional and political backgrounds.
Can Jim Bunn, with all his colorful background, sneak in and win the thing?
The HD 24 Primary will be one to watch.
-Coast Guy
Oh, come on, -- silly is it? – The fact that the GOP in Oregon is unable to muster even a token candidate for Attorney General and only a dim bulb like Rick Dancer for SOS shows just how inept and discombobulated it is. It’s only silly in your eyes because it’s so telling of how much damage getting into bed with the far right has done to the GOP over the last 25 years.
My God, I mean, the highest legal office in the state, and not only can’t you guys win it, you can’t even compete! And you just laugh it off like it’s no big deal. Well, it is a big deal, whether you want to admit it or not.
It’s called whistling past the graveyard, and you can call the tune.
Ladies and Gentlemen, that sound you hear is the death rattle of GOP in Oregon.
murphy the moonbat troll,
It is silly in that the democrat trolls attempt to hijack a thread totally unrelated to the AG.
Now go back to your Novick/Merkley fight on blueoregon and keep defending your democrat candidates who are all beginning to fizzle.
And remember, this thread is not about the AG race.
Now...back on topic.

All I can say is:
Patti Smith is one of my very very favorite people in the Legislature and her retirement leaves some mighty damn big shoes to fill.
I hope he's the right man for the job.
anon 3:12,
I can't agree more. Patti Smith has been one of my favorite legislators for a long time and I felt like I was punched in the gut when I heard she was not running again.
Matt is a good man and if he wins I feel like he will make us all proud.
It is time to send "the law" to Salem.
yip yip
If he wins, he should be appointed Republican Whip. Bet he could keep the party in line. :)
Non-O,
You know what happens when you fight "The Law?"
The Law wins.
How does the old song go....
"I fought The Law and he kicked my teeth down my troat"
:)
