Write in Ron Saxton?
AJ over at Write Idea blog has an interesting suggestion. I'm not sure how I feel about it in that I have never been a fan of Ron Saxton. However Saxton might actually make a good AG.
AJ's plan? Write Ideas says; Write in Ron Saxton on your May primary ballot. After the 2006 election Saxton said he was unlikely to seek public office again. However, if he is nominated by write-in votes, he would likely accept the nomination. Saxton has the qualifications, high name-recognition, and fairly moderate positions on the issues that it will take to win the general election.

Please, Ron needs, like Kevin Mannix to just go away so the Oregon Republican Party can pull itself out of its terminal status with some republicans that don't have the baggage of being losers.
Oh wait Mannix got WW's endorsement. Shouldn't that count against him?
Back to Ron, Ron, be a contributor not a candidate and the party will be better for it.
Actually,
I think Ron would be a fantastic AG, and I was already planning on writing him in as AG. Think about it for a moment, what does the AG do? He runs the largest law firm in the state of Oregon.
What did Saxton do? He ran one of the largest law firms (Ater Wynne) in the state of Oregon.
Saxton would do a terrific job in that post and is far more qualified than the two democrat candidates.
We just need to get the word out.
If a person is not willing to run and fails demonstrate willingness by filing then there no reason to write in his or hers name
Terrible idea.
What _Republicans_ should do is write in the name of the "loser" of the Democratic Prima. That way we can have a redux of the primary in the general.
Plus it would be interesting if anyone's personal desire would trump party loyalty. Any ideas if either Kroger or MacPherson would accept the R nomination if they lost the D nomination?
:)
It's a great idea!!! Republicans need to learn that politics is a game of ADDITION. Check those registrations numbers, even if the dolts don't actually vote.
I'll write him in.
If he accepts and runs, it would be brilliant.
With the Dem candidates trying so hard to outmaneuver each other to the left, it would give him a great opportunity in the general.
I'm just guessing, but I think Saxton would match up better against MacPherson.
It would boil down to a politician against a politician and the one with the best name recognition (Saxton) would have an advantage.
Tougher matchup against Kroger because you have a Dem law-and-order guy against a Rep politician - Kroger could use messaging that cuts into traditional republican voting base.
Either way, Saxton would be a lot better choice than either of the other two.
I'd like to think about this for a day or two, but my initial reaction is that we should do this. We can write in Saxton's name and let him decide after the primary whether he wants to make the run.
Ron, give it some serious thought, because it would not be hard for you to get the nomination with write-in votes. Chances are, you only have to beat out Mickey Mouse.
Neither Democrat is going to start out strong. You would have a decent shot at beating either of them.
You might keep in mind that in the early eighties Ted Kulongosi was beaten by Vic Atijeh for governor almost as badly as I was by Kitzhaber in '98, and then came back and was elected as attorney general, then as a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court and then as governor. So your recent loss does not have to spell the end.
I think you might make an excellent attorney general and ought to give it some serious thought. Win or lose, this would be a lot easier race than the gubernatorial one.
One caveat, ultimately I want to see both the office of attorney general and secretary of state become nonpartisan. It is nuts to have the chief elections office and state attorney be members of a political party, especially a major one.
Bill is correct, in that the offices of Attorney General and Secretary of State should be nonpartisan.
Ron just wrote, expressing appreciation, but that he's not interested.
I think Ron may still be a little busy working for JELD-WEN
I can not believe the words I am about to write: I agree with Bill Sizemore: that the AG and SoS should be non-partisan.
I maintain that Ron, nice guy and excellent attorney he may be, is damaged political goods. Not just because of his questionable ethics of gaming the public school residency requirements, but also because you can't win if your only platform is I will cut government spending. Looking at the state of the highways, the state police, public education, mental health facilities etc, people in Oregon believe the infrastructure is rotting around them. Of course electing tax/spenders hasn't exactly done wonders but you have to have positive message and I thought Ron's was far too negative.
Speculation in Republican circles is that Saxton will now accept the nomination...
