Sen. Smith too smart by half?

NWR in the news

The big AP story is beginning to drill down in to what could be more problems for Sen. Gordon Smith. We have talked about some of them here.

Now you have Rob Kremer admitting that he is not voting for Sen. Smith because of Smith's support of the huge tax increase called "Cap and Trade."

As for Kremer, he says Smith lost him when he sided with Democrats last month in support of a cap-and-trade system, which would cap greenhouse gas emissions. The bill ultimately failed, but Smith said at the time that the climate change legislation would have helped reduce reliance on oil from overseas, while stimulating renewable energy industry.
Kremer, though, said the bill would increase energy prices at a time when Oregon's gas prices are among the highest in the nation. It was, for him, the last straw.
"That is a complete betrayal of what any reasonable conservative should expect," Kremer said. "He's always been a reliable vote on taxes, but the cap and trade system is a monumental tax increase. So for him to betray that long-standing principle is enough to lose my vote."

It should be no surprise that I tend to agree with Kremer. Unfortunately I think that the Smith campaign is trying to be too smart by half and one lesson that should have been learned by the 2006 elections is that many many Republican voters just plain stayed home and did not vote.

Yet now Smith wants to stick more beans in the noses of those Republicans?
And some are just fed up, said Ted Piccolo, who runs nwrepublican.com, a widely read GOP blog.
"People understand it is a campaign year, there might be some positions or votes that will frustrate you, but man, he has gone way, way out of his way to cozy up to the Democrats," Piccolo said. "I think the Smith people are going to take all Republicans for granted and just assume they will show up, and you can't assume that. Politics isn't a spreadsheet."

I have always said that I think that politics is more art than science. In fact I think it is probably more like 70% art and 30% science. But the "certified smart" folks who make a pretty good living advising candidates need to find quantitative ways to show some legitimacy to their high priced consultancy and so they spend an inordinate amount of time rummaging through spreadsheets to crunch numbers.

And then when they lose they can find their own "facts" built in to their spreadsheets. Instead of taking a close look at the qualitative aspects of their candidates and the kinds of campaigns they run.

Smith could be in real trouble if a higher profile conservative were to consider jumping into this race. Of course the thought of a higher profile conservative doesn't quite fit in to the spread sheet.

Smith has been in favor of drilling in ANWR in the past. He could be running on the message of Democrats being in favor of high gas prices. Unfortunately he is not and that issue is left out there for someone to take hold of.

Smith could be running in opposition to "card check" unionizing. That is the Union Thug method of eliminating private ballots so that the Union Thugs can openly intimidate those who may not want to vote with them. Unfortunately Smith is not saying a word about that, even though polling shows that the issue is a winner EVEN AMONGST UNION HOUSEHOLDS.

Again... The Smith campaign skipping the art in favor of the science.

Will it work? According to Tim Nashif Smith's game is just right:
"He is in a re-election campaign," said Tim Nashif, who heads the Oregon Family Council, a group that spearheaded the state's ban on gay marriage. "It makes perfectly good sense to me that he needs to say what he has done to appeal to Oregonians as a whole."

As I mentioned to the AP reporter I think that Smith is dangerously running the risk of being "too smart by half."

I look forward to voting for Senator Smith.

It appears Rob would prefer to have Merkley. Lets see what types of taxes pass when Rob sends Merkley to DC over Smith.

Rob Kremer said...

Actually, Anon, I told the reporter that I think Smith's positioning is politically smart and that he will probably win because of it, and that I hope he still does win.

I just can't vote for him.

Smith is taking Republican votes for granted and trying to win independents and confused D's. Some might call that smart. Problem is, D's aren't so confused anymore after 8 years of Bush, independents are moving left and no longer trust Republicans, and Smith is so obviously right wing if you look at his overall history, he has to try to hide his record and confuse people. Sounds like he's getting desperate. He may still be able to buy himself the election, but R's can expect getting sold out by Smith again and again. He's lost his way and gotten addicted to his comfortable Senate seat and house in Washington, DC.

Gordon Smith is still going to be a better vote overall for Oregonians than Jeff Merkley. Merkley is beholden to big Labor Unions as evidenced by his support of the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation which will cripple small businesses in America and Oregon.
Merkley has already pandered to the unions by passing a bill last session which he co-sponsored, to make it easier for public employee unions to take money away from hard-working, honest Oregon families and then line the pockets of the big labor union bosses. These guys then get cushy jobs with Teddy K, give millions to Merkley and his fellow conspirators and then reap the benefits when he helps pass legislation that makes it easier for unions to get even MORE money from workers without holding a private ballot vote. Ludicrous......
I understand that it's a principle thing Rob, but you have to look at the big picture and even though you are either trying to send a message or think that your one vote won't count, can you afford to take that chance this election?

I don't know if Gordo's too smart by half, but he is too smarmy by half. I don't like him on border security, illegal aliens, nor cap and trade.

I don't like Smith, but I am going to vote for him because I'd prefer Merkley to not actually HAVE a political job.

anon 10:45,
I don't understand your comment.

On one side you seem to be saying that Sen. Smith is "obviously right wing," and then on the other you say he will sell out the Republicans?

Obviously it is not so obvious?
-----

As for me, I just don't know... I really don't.

Cap and trade, as Rob has mentioned, would be one of the biggest tax increases ever leveled upon Americans and Smith supported it and argued for it.

Thus killing many folks at the grassroots who have been trying to build up arguments against it. In that sense he is working in cross purposes against what is right.

If he would just spend some of his campaign dollars explaining why the Democrats are in favor of high gas prices he could accomplish two tasks. 1) keep the grass roots motivated 2) keep the Democrats on the defensive on an issue they are clearly wrong about.

The one issue I like him on, that he has not gone south on, is the "card check" or as ra said the "employee free choice act."

Which is anathema to free choice and is definately anti-employee.

Unfortunately, I am beginning to believe that Mr. Merkley is the more honest of the two candidates.

Sure, you get socialism-lite with Merkley, but his background indicates he may understand the importance of national defense, against all enemies...even the guys who are coming here for economic freedom, illegally.

Merkley can go back to Washington and explain to the others in his caucus--first-hand--the problems associated with the Green Agenda.

Finally, maybe the Republican party will recruit a Republican. Good judges, economic freedom, property rights. And common sense. Energy policies that benefit the working-man, Republican or Democrat.

Freedom from federal laws that tie-up our forests for the environuts. Defense of the role of the states to decide issues not covered by the Constitution.

Fundamental change.

Gordon is not this candidate.

He lost my vote last year when he decided it was politically expedient for him to tell Al-Qaeda when the US would be withdrawing its troops. Like Rob, I hope he wins (and if he doesn't, I fear it's gonna be a long time before another Republican gets that seat) but it won't be with my vote.

I hope you folks aren't this naive. I know both Rob and Ted are not. Gordon knew the vote count so his colleagues gave him a wink and nod knowing he was in a fairly tough race to vote for the cap and trade legislation. I would suggest that if the vote actually meant something he would have voted with his party.

"I hope he still does win.

I just can't vote for him."

That right there sums up the complete IDIOCY that is the so-called "movement conservatives."

If you hope he'll win, then VOTE FOR HIM YOU IDIOT!

1) Socialism-lite? Try hard core marxist socialism. His idol is Jimmy Carter.

2) Just because he worked in the defense department ages ago doesn't mean he ever understood it. He is stridently anti-war and vehemently opposed to the war on terror. He wants our unconditional surrender in Iraq.

3) Illegal aliens? Actually, Merkley used his power as speaker to block every single bill aimed at illegal aliens. He would grant "reconquista" to south-of-the-border terrorists.

I worked with the man in Salem. Yes, he is honest and genuinely believes in helping others. I won't argue that. But he believes in helping others by redistributing wealth, taxing and oppressing corporations and employers, gutting national security, putting government in charge of everything, creating special new rights for the GLBT crowd, pandering to every special interest in the book (plus inventing a few more), environmental protectionism, union thuggery, and handing America over to Mexico. But, oh, it's ok, because it is all for the children.

If that's the sort of "help" you want, then, by all means, vote for Merkley (or "against" Smith, or not at all). But if you think the Merkley stand on issues is even a TAD too liberal, then the only logical choice is supporting Gordon Smith.

Right now, we have a moderate and a liberal representing us in the Senate. I've carefully studied Merkley, Smith, and Ron Wyden. Merkley is the most far-left of the three.

If Smith wins, we remain moderate and liberal. If Merkley wins, we shift to liberal and radical leftist.

Is that what you want?

This race is a microcosm of the Obama-McCain race. I am sick to death of hearing "conservatives" say they won't vote for McCain on principle. Well, then we will have President Obama. It is just like 2006... conservatives sat out to teach Republicans a lesson. Now we have Speaker Pelosi.

Is that your conservative solution? President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Senator Merkley? And that means Supreme Court Justices Lawrence Tribe and Erwin Chemerinsky (don't know them? Google is your friend). It means Kyoto. It means $10 gasoline. It means surrender in Iraq. It means "press 2 for English."

Is that what you want?

WAKE UP, MORONS!

There is an old political proverb that states in democracies and republics, the people get the government they deserve. Well, if you won't support people like Smith and McCain, you WILL get the government you deserve.

I am Coyote said...

common sense,
And you used the precise argument that would not work for someone like me.

I don't know but that I probably will end up voting for McCain.

He has at least come out in favor of drilling and I have to give him credit for that.

However the line that if I DON'T support or vote for him then I get Obama is just a version of extortion and will not work.

I want to vote for someone and want that someone to give me a reason TO vote for them.

I don't care about Obama or if he wins. My life, really, would change very little. Oh I would have to work a little harder and have less to show for it.

Oh sure it will screw up my health care and such a little bit.

But my life and my life's station is not based on who is in the White House.

So please don't try to scare me IN TO voting for McCain. It may work for others and perhaps that is who that kind of argument is targeted for. But not here.

It certainly does not work to call someone a "moron" and then ask them to support your candidate. LOL...

So I would not recommend that for a "retail" message.

As it stands right now I am more apt to vote for McCain than I was a month or so ago.

I'll not work for him but, at this point, will probably vote for him.

I gave up on him even before he got into the US Senate when, anticipating a run for that office, he voted to use the money of his constituents in eastern Oregon to butter up (bribe) Portland area voters with a new light rail line.

He's a sleaze-ball -- what more can be said?

Coyote,

Smith is obviously right wing. He's just willing to bend his principles. He's trying to reinvent himself because its an election year. This has been painfully obvious ever since the 2006 election results came in and he called the war in Iraq criminal. Since then, on vote after vote he's shown he's willing to sell out his Republican base to get re-elected.

But Anon 4:45 is right, Smith knew Bush would veto cap and trade and that there weren't 60 votes anyway, so chose to pander to Portland liberals instead of stand up for principle. And you are right that he completely undercut the grassroots when he did that. And again when he practically endorsed Obama in his TV ads.

He's become a political chameleon now that its an election year whose become much more comfortable inside the Beltway than in Pendleton.

I can't vote for that.

Gordon Smith is tearing the heart and soul out of the Republican Party in Oregon. He is teaching all of those squishy Republican legislators that the way to win in Oregon is to govern like a Democrat and the message is getting through. When R's have control in Salem, they are afraid to vote like R's. They follow the Smith model instead.

Smith's kind of politics makes me nauseous. I will not vote for him this Fall. I understand moving tothe middle in an election year. Both sides do it. But the list of Smith betrayals is too long and goes too far back to be that simple.

Losing his seat to a Democrat might be disastrous, but so is keeping him in office and letting his tear the soul out of the Republican Party.

I predict that before election day, enough conservatives will reach this same conclusion that Smith will lose his bid for reelection and that will be both tragic and helpful to those of us who actually believe in something.

The conservative base has been slapped in the face by Gordon Smith one time too many, or make that 10 times too many. I have talked to a lot of intelligent, common sense conservatives lately, who a year or two ago had the same "practical" mindset as the person who made the "moron" remark above, and those people have in mass decided that they simply will not be abused and slapped in the face by Smith any longer.

There will be a conservative uprising against Smith this year and it will cost him his seat and though the loss will be significant, we will in some ways be better for it.

anon1028 is right. If you want someone to win, you vote for them. If you don't vote for them, then you don't want them win.

This is what is wrong with the Republican Party in Oregon. The certified smart people are idiots.

Sorry Rob, but your comment was idiotic, retarded, moronic, and just plain stupid.

A bad Republican is better than a good Democrat. Which is only partly true, since the only good Democrats are dead. Which means half the Kennedy's are good, and Teddy Kennedy will be good soon.

Anon 11:53 said in part: "This has been painfully obvious ever since the 2006 election results came in and he called the war in Iraq criminal."

Please stop repeating that myth. He did not call the war criminal; he called the prosecution of the war at that time -- pre-surge -- criminal. There is a HUGE difference (he was still wrong, but perhaps hyperbolic).

Although I can sympathize with both Bill and Rob above, I cannot conclude the same. I will vote FOR Smith, perhaps a little less than gladly. That he has been a fairly consistent vote for President Bush is the best thing he has going (leave it to the Dems to bring this out); I trust he will be the same kind of vote for President McCain.
